Pride Month is a time to celebrate diversity and equality. NHS Mid and South Essex offers free suicide prevention training Essex residents can access to address LGBTQ+ mental health inequalities affecting our communities.
Why LGBTQ+ mental health support matters
LGBTQ+ people are more than twice as likely to experience mental health conditions like depression and anxiety. Around half have experienced suicidal thoughts, with young people and trans individuals at particularly high risk.
These disparities stem from homophobia, transphobia, family rejection, and barriers to accessing inclusive healthcare. Understanding these challenges is the first step in providing effective support.
How Let’s Talk About Suicide training works
Suicide is preventable. Talking saves lives. The Let’s Talk About Suicide training is a free, 20-minute online suicide prevention training Essex course that gives you practical skills to support someone in crisis.
This evidence-based training programme has helped thousands of people across the UK feel more confident in mental health conversations. The course covers real-world scenarios and provides practical tools you can use immediately.
The training teaches you how to:
- See the problem – recognise when someone may be at risk of suicide
- Say the words – respond with empathy and confidence, including how to ask directly about suicide
- Signpost to support – know where to find help and how to connect people with professional services
