System Clinical Lead for Cardiovascular Health
Neill McGee is a dedicated nurse whose passion for cardiology began during a student placement in the coronary care unit at the Royal United Hospital in Bath. There, he engaged with nurse-led thrombolysis for acute myocardial infarction (MI), a pioneering practice at the time, and contributed to research trials focused on reducing myocardial damage through optimised door-to-needle times. After relocating to Essex, Neill joined the team at the Essex Cardiothoracic Centre when it opened in 2007, witnessing the transition to primary percutaneous coronary intervention as the new gold standard for MI treatment. He played an active role in adapting this advanced care approach to achieve the best health outcomes for patients across East Anglia.
Now working in primary care as an advanced nurse practitioner and CVD lead, Neill is focused on improving cardiovascular health at the population level. He believes that primary care clinicians are uniquely positioned to make a significant impact on cardiovascular disease by prioritising the “ABC” approach—AF detection and treatment, blood pressure management, and cholesterol control. As CVD lead, he is committed to preventing the severe consequences of cardiovascular disease through timely, optimised treatment across various healthcare settings, with the goal of reducing acute admissions for stroke, MI, and heart failure.
Outside his professional work, Neill is an avid cyclist and spends many weekends on his bike, finding both relaxation and adventure on the open road.
