We wanted to make local residents aware that the Long COVID Service in mid and south Essex is no longer accepting new referrals and will officially be closing on 28 February 2026.
People affected by long COVID will continue to receive care and support through their GP and other local services. Your GP will remain your first point of contact and can refer you to the most appropriate services for your symptoms, such as breathing support, fatigue management, mental health, or rehabilitation – depending on your symptoms and what’s right for you.
Support is still available
If you are already receiving care for long COVID from your GP or another specialist service, nothing will change for you.
If you are experiencing symptoms of long COVID and are not already receiving care, please speak to your GP in the first instance. They will assess your needs and refer you to the most suitable services.
For those currently supported by the MSE Long COVID Service, the team will continue to work with you until 28 February 2026 and ensure you have a clear support plan in place before the service ends.
Why is this change happening?
The NHS developed temporary long COVID services during the pandemic to support people affected by the long-term effects of COVID-19. Over time, fewer people have been referred to long COVID services (including locally), and national funding for dedicated long COVID services has ended.
In mid and south Essex, we are integrating long COVID care into existing NHS pathways to make sure people continue to get the right support in the right place.
What if I have questions or concerns?
We understand this change may cause concern and are working closely with local providers to ensure a smooth transition and continuity of care.
