NHS Mid and South Essex have been responsible for commissioning Dental Services in mid and south Essex since 2023.
Since then, we have continued to increase the amount of NHS dental appointments available each year across and we have also introduced specific initiatives to help residents of all ages to access NHS dental services.
One of our initiatives, which delivers dental services in care homes, has also helped reduce pressure on specialist dental services which support patients with complex needs, including people with learning disabilities. The service, delivered by Community Dental Services offers tailored support — from home visits and accessible dental chairs to longer appointments, sensory-friendly environments, and specialist sedation.
We asked Karissa, a dentist in Southend, and Robbie from Southend, to tell us more about how dentists can support patients.
As a dentist I know how important it is to make sure young children, people dental phobias or people with learning disabilities feel supported and can access dental care.
Going to the dentist helps keep your mouth healthy. This is very important for everyone, including people with learning disabilities.
People with learning disabilities may be at higher risk of oral health issues due to difficulties swallowing, reduced saliva production (which can be a side effect of prescription medications), and difficulties brushing teeth well.
When your mouth is not clean, oral bacteria can accumulate and be breathed (aspirated) into the lungs, causing serious infections.
How we can help make your visit easier
There are lots of ways dentists can help you prepare and try to make your visit go as smoothly as possible.
I recently met Robbie who explained: “I don’t like the feel of the water jet that the dentists use, so when I go to my dental appointments I let the dentist know and they are careful to keep this to a minimum and are always very gentle.”
When you’re booking your appointment, speak to the receptionist to see how your dentist can help. Here are some ways I’ve tried to help patients:
Before you come:
- You can visit our practice first to look around
- We can show you photos of our rooms
- We can meet you before your appointment so you know who will be treating you
During your visit:
- Give you more time for the appointment
- Schedule the appointment for the time of day that’s best for you, for example, the time of day they feel most calm or when the waiting room is quietest
- We can speak slowly and clearly and talk to you directly, not just the person with you
- Show you what we will do first
- You can bring someone you trust with you
- We can make the lights dimmer
- Check you understand
- Stop if you need a break
We want to help you
Looking after your teeth is important for staying healthy. Dentists can help make your visits as easy as possible.
Sometimes patients need extra support that isn’t available in high street dentists, which is where the mid and south Essex Specialist Dental Service can help. Ask your dentist about a referral or find out more on the Community Dental Services website.
