It was smiles all round as a brand-new, state-of-the-art NHS dental practice officially opened in Grays.
The move marks a major boost to NHS dental access for residents across Thurrock as practice opens with five modern surgeries, two newly recruited dentists and the ability to deliver 5,000 NHS dental units in its first year, rising to 10,000 annually thereafter.
Grays Dental Care, delivered by Dentistry for You in partnership with NHS Mid and South Essex Integrated Care Board (ICB), will significantly expand NHS capacity in an area long affected by limited access to dental services.
The opening of the Milton Road practice was marked by a special event attended by the MP for Thurrock, Jen Craft, alongside senior leaders from NHS Mid and South Essex ICB.
Speaking at the event, principal director at Dentistry for You, Dr Esmail Harunani, described the opening as “a milestone for Grays and the wider community,” highlighting years of growing demand at the group’s existing practice St Clements Dental Care, which has more than 20,000 patients registered and waiting times exceeding three months.
“This community has waited far too long for better access to NHS dentistry,” he said. “This new practice allows us to expand capacity, improve accessibility and deliver high-quality NHS care in a modern, welcoming environment.”
The new site includes enhanced accessibility features, including a bariatric dental chair – the only one of its kind across the area – ensuring dignified care for patients who often struggle to access dental services elsewhere.
A fantastic early Christmas present for Grays and Thurrock.
This is a much-needed facility in one of the most underserved areas for NHS dentistry in Essex. Good oral health is fundamental to overall health, and this practice will make a real difference to families, children and vulnerable residents. It’s exactly the kind of good news story we should be shouting about.
Thurrock MP, Jen Craft
William Guy, Director of Primary Care at NHS Mid and South Essex ICB, praised the collaboration behind the project and the commitment of the Dentistry for You team.
You can feel the strong family atmosphere here, and that’s what underpins successful, sustainable services. This practice delivers exactly what was promised and will serve the people of Grays for many years to come.
William Guy, Director of Primary Care at NHS Mid and South Essex ICB
