5 May 2025 marks the International Day of the Midwife – a global event dedicated to recognising the skill, care and commitment midwives bring to families around the world. It’s an opportunity to reflect on the vital role midwives play in supporting women and birthing people through every stage of pregnancy, birth and the postnatal journey.
Midwives are trained healthcare professionals who provide expert, compassionate care – not just in hospitals and clinics, but also in homes, communities and specialist services. To shine a light on the profession, we spoke to Rosie Newman, Consultant Midwife at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, about her experiences and the reality of modern midwifery.
