Unlike type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes can often be prevented through straightforward lifestyle and dietary adjustments.
Developing diabetes can lead to severe complications, including heart disease. With millions at risk, taking proactive steps can significantly mitigate this possibility.
Early diagnosis of diabetes is paramount, as untreated cases are prone to worsening and can result in long-term health issues. However, with effective management, many individuals can lead healthy, active lives.
Factors that may increase your risk of type 2 diabetes include:
- Being overweight or obese
- Maintaining an unhealthy diet
- Having a family history of type 2 diabetes
- Belonging to an Asian, Black African, or African Caribbean ethnic background
- Long-term use of certain medications such as steroids
- High blood pressure
- A history of gestational diabetes during pregnancy
