Your GP team

Your GP surgery team is made up of a range of healthcare professionals with the expertise to help you with your health needs. Below is information about some of the roles involved in delivering care in our GP practices. Variation of roles does differ in surgeries across mid and south Essex, so please check with your GP's reception team to find out which roles are available for you to access.

  • Advanced nurse practitioners (ANPs)

    Advanced nurse practitioners are registered nurses who have completed extra training and academic qualification to be able to clinically assess, diagnose, refer and treat patients who present with undiagnosed or undifferentiated problems.

  • Care coordinator

    Care coordinators may be the first point of contact for some patients. They are primarily responsible for arranging and supervising interdisciplinary and individual patient care.

  • Care navigators and reception team

    Care Navigators work in practice reception teams and are specially trained to know about the care and services available to you at your surgery and in your area.

  • Clinical pharmacists

    Clinical pharmacists work as part of the general practice team to improve value and outcomes.

  • Dietitian

    Dietitians help patients self-manage their conditions and make prevention possible.

  • Health and wellbeing coach

    Health and wellbeing coaches work with patients to help them achieve personal fitness and lifestyle goals.

  • Healthcare assistant

    Healthcare assistants work alongside the healthcare professional team to provide joined-up care.

  • Mental health therapists and practitioners

    Mental health professionals help you get the support you require, when you need it.

  • Occupational therapist

    Occupational therapists assess the needs of people to do what they need and want to do (occupations).

  • Paramedic or emergency care practitioner

    Paramedics, or as they are sometimes called primary care emergency care practitioners, are people trained in nursing and paramedic skills.

  • Physician associate

    Physician associates are trained and qualified to diagnose and treat a wide range of health conditions.

  • Pharmacy technician

    Pharmacy technicians play an important role, complementing health care colleagues.

  • Physiotherapist

    Musculoskeletal (MSK) health issues such as back, muscle and joint pains are the most common cause of repeat GP appointments and account for around 1 in 5 of all GP appointments.

  • Social prescribing link worker

    Social prescribing link workers work in practices to help residents access support within the community.
