Amanda is a Social Prescriber that works across three GP surgeries in west Basildon. She provides vital support that goes beyond medical treatment. This includes connecting people with the social, emotional, and practical help they need to improve their wellbeing.
Amanda’s role is hugely varied, ranging from supporting a new mother referred just six weeks after giving birth, to helping a patient over 100 years old. The role is as diverse as the community it serves.
Patients are referred by their GP or other practice staff, and appointments are tailored to the patient’s needs. Social Prescribers can offer time, empathy, and guidance – whether it’s a friendly chat or a pathway to more specialised support. It’s a vital bridge between clinical care and community support. Areas of support include:
- debt management
- housing advice
- combatting social isolation
- weight management and physical activity
- support for specific conditions like dementia or autism
- bereavement, and end-of-life care.
Amanda explains: “I love working with people; to do this job well, you need to know your local community and have a passion for helping others. The NHS can sometimes feel confusing – my role is to make sure people have the time to talk through their problems and feel heard. I can also make sure they speak to the right people to help make a difference.”
Social Prescribers play a key role in enhancing practice resilience. Alongside other healthcare professionals now working in general practice, they are helping patients access the right care for their needs. By spending time with patients and exploring their needs in depth, Social Prescribers free up GPs and other clinical staff to focus on more complex medical cases. This not only improves efficiency but also expands the range of services available within the practice.
