“Our role is to provide an initial assessment on a patient’s mental health and wellbeing. We aim to link people in with the services that would best suit their needs or preferences. We can also explore and review medications as needed.
“Unlike other mental health services, we offer short-term support and make it easier to access local help. This means that patients can be seen quickly, get the right support and come back to us easily at any time.
James explains how the role of a Primary Care Mental Health Nurse benefits patients, he says:
“We work very closely with GPs offering specialist mental health input and are linked into the vast array of community services and organisations within the local area. This enables us to deliver holistic care that is personalised to each and every patient to help meet their specific needs in a way that will work for them.
“Access to our service is simple and straight-forward. And most importantly, because we are local, we can be reached easily. We can signpost patients to the most suitable service, in a way that they are comfortable with. It’s so important that patients feel included in choosing the pathway, especially when they might be struggling.
“The most fulfilling part of my role is that I can make a difference. This gives me the opportunity to help people and improve their wellbeing.
